When you ask them, most people would tell you that one of the things they look forward to the most about the Christmas holiday season is the tree. Everyone loves the Christmas tree. Okay, maybe not the setting it up part so much, but the ritual of decorating the tree and then its cheerful presence in the room just says Christmas. I agree that the tree is wonderful, but I actually prefer the annual appearance of Christmas Flowers in our home. I have a cutting garden in the spring and my husband is very good about bringing home a fresh bouquet every few weeks through the summer, but there’s something about a Christmas Flower that’s special.

Naturally, Poinsettias have to be my favorite. While they’re usually thought of as being a red, potted plant, there is a real range of this plant available when the holiday season rolls around. I’m particularly fond of the specimens offered by 1-800flowers.com, the site where I buy all my flowers and gift baskets. Their Poinsettias are of the highest quality, with brilliant scarlet blooms and thick, healthy foliage. Last year, I ordered the largest version they offer and I was immensely pleased with what I received. It was healthy and fresh when it was delivered and it measured a foot and a half in height with multiple blooms; it was immediately the focal point of the room, even drawing the eye away from the Christmas tree.

One thing I learned from shopping at 1-800flowers.com is that Christmas Flowers need not be limited to Poinsettias, as much as I love that plant. Just browsing through the colorful online catalog, I can see that they offer close to 75 different Christmas Flowers and Plants in ready made arrangements. Given the season, the Christmas Flower arrangements tend to be dominated by red, white and green, with my favorite being the absolutely fabulous Glorious Christmas arrangement, made up of a spectacularly lush combination of red and white snapdragons, roses, lilies and greenery in an attractive red, Victorian style glass vase. Or, for something different, there’s the Martha Stewart Charming Holiday Bouquet, featuring the holiday scent of mixed evergreen boughs, pine cones, ribbon and silver ornaments, all in a silver vase.

A friend of mine told me about the Holiday Tree arrangement she saw on the television. It’s a lovely, tree-shaped arrangement in an attractive silver bowl. The greenery of the “tree” is made up of boxwood, which gives off a very nice fragrance, and it’s decorated with red and white miniature carnations and cushion poms with a silver star ornament tree topper. The large version of this centerpiece arrangements is nearly two feet tall.

In my house, we buy a Christmas tree every December and decorate it with sparkling white lights and tinsel. Then, we add the holiday color with Poinsettias throughout the room and vases overflowing with beautiful Christmas Flowers strategically placed on tables and the mantle. It looks, and smells, wonderful.
